Atlassian’s illustration system is called Tandem, and has been evolving since it launched in 2016. People are an integral part of this system and give each composition a richer narrative; highlighting diversity, inclusion and teamwork. In early 2022, the illustration team was tasked with updating all of the people illustrations. The characters are a fundamental part of each composition as they help familiarize and welcome customers to understand and interact with the products.
Each avatar was given multiple views, including a simplified headshot and a full body. Each asset has an important role in illustrated compositions and animation.
Originally, the character sets were created geometrically and were simple in their appearance. The updated versions are based off real people. Each person has an individual look: age, body type, and race. The collection embodies a more realistic view of Atlassian’s customers; people from all over the world!
Each person comes in a face forward, 3/4 and side views.
Simplified avatars have no facial features and exist in monochromatic palettes and naturalistic colors.
The full bodied people show variation in age, body type, gender, and race. Each person has a 3/4 front, 3/4 back, and front facing perspectives. They are all engaging in some kind of activity; walking, pointing, grabbing etc. These new and improved people were built in a consistent way so that their poses can be manipulated easily for new compositions or in animated scenes.
People are shown in almost every illustration; here are a variety of examples from printed books, social media and web pages.
