Close up of the wallpaper design in Yokohama, Japan
Atlassian Office Art
Atlassian Corporation is an Australian software company that develops products for software developers, project managers and other software development teams. Their global headquarters are located in Sydney, Australia with US offices in San Francisco, New York, and Austin, Texas, to name a few. The company is committed to providing a working environment that fuels collaboration and allows each employee to feel welcome and at ease. Many of the offices have varying styles and themes, local artists and craftsmen are frequently involved in creating custom murals or spaces.
I created framed art prints, murals, and wallpapers for offices in Yokohama, Japan, Manila, Philippines & most recently in Austin, Texas. Below, I’ll share my inspiration, process and photos of these enjoyable projects.
Yokohama, Japan
This office is located in the port city of Yokohama, Japan and has spectacular waterfront views. The office itself houses a small number of employees and has an open floor plan with many windows. The office interior design theme is water related as the meeting rooms are named after different hot springs (hot springs are popular in the area and a common activity for locals and tourists). The city has a dense history that is centered around its ports the crucial role of water in the region.
The team wanted a mural to cover the walls surrounding the central kitchen/meeting area. I proposed an open and airy “scene” using muted tones with subtle sketches of meaningful places, historical references and animals scattered throughout. People participating together in water related activities (swimming, walking, resting, boating etc.) provide a lively perspective and reinforce important Atlassian values of teamwork and collaboration. Hand drawn figures were created using rough line work and bold, primary colors. Various places (architectural settings), boats and animals make up larger, single toned, textured drawings, providing some geographic context and history. The final wall murals adapt cohesively to the office space, and support the stunning views through the windows. The subtle, blue tones paired with pops of smaller colors create a peaceful, water themed scene filled with interesting details and subject matter, all magnifying the importance of community.
Manila, Philippines
Atlassian has an office building in Manila which has been modernized through various art installations in the interior meeting spaces. Our goal was to bring more Atlassian personality, along with references of the Philippine region to the office. These additions create a more welcoming, colorful and delightful environment for the teams in the building. It gives them a sense of belonging to Atlassian and encourages teamwork and collaboration.
I had the opportunity to transform a space that is used as a stage for company-wide meetings into a more official lounge area, and casual meeting space. The area is sometimes used for special events and the space needed to feel special, and stimulating.
We decided to create a gallery style wall of framed artwork in varying sizes. I chose a combination of abstract, plants and animals. The Philippines are known for exceptionally beautiful greenery and rare, (mostly endangered) animals. I focused on some of the most well known animals to the region (Philippine Eagle, various exotic birds, the water buffalo or Tamaraw, The Philippine Deer, tiny monkeys called Tarsiers and many more).
The animals were created using a vibrant color palette paired with distinctive plants they rely on for survival. For the abstract pieces, I scaled up certain elements from various illustrations along with bold texture and lines.
